Poster for next week's Tijuana lucha show!

Special thanks to El Mortal de Tijuana for the event posters and results!

July 23, 2002

This week, Vince McMahon stunned the wrestling world when he introduced his one time rival, Eric Bischoff, to WWE television.  The image of the two of them hugging on the set of Monday Night Raw was something that most wrestling fans thought they would never see in a million years.  Sorry to break it to ya' Vince, but the most surreal moment in wrestling eludes you this week, as the boys in Tijuana have trumped you.
It was announced last Friday that AAA would be in returning to the Auditorio de Tijuana this week, as they are known to do now and again.  Usually, these shows are headlined by the 'stars' of AAA, with many of the TJ regulars thrown in to the mix.  Although the lineups are normally lackluster at best, the AAA booking committee was  able  to  book  a  main  event that is even more peculiar  than  the  McMahon/Bischoff  connection.  Nicho El Millonario, who rose to lucha superstardom in the 90's as the eccentric Psicosis will team with AAA mainstays Heavy Metal and Mascara Sagrada to face Hector  Garza,  Rey Misterio, and  the man that was given the Psicosis gimmick when Nicho left Mexico to wrestle  in  America.  AAA  has  been  historically bashed  by  internet  fans  for  reusing  gimmicks of established stars (Psicosis, La Parka, Octagon, etc.), but one has to wonder the type of animosity one of the originals has for his low budget doppleganger.  Knowing this, the TJ crowd will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipating the moment Nicho and Psicosis get tagged in by their respective teams.  Just seeing these two standing face to face in the middle of the ring should be worth the price of admission, and the moment that they begin trading blows will be historic.
Politics often seem to water down the more controversial aspects of lucha libre (especially in recent weeks), and it has even been speculated that the initial meeting backstage between the two Psicosis' will be more brutal.
UPDATE:  Nicho's team was awarded victory, but only after his teammate Heavy Metal turned on the tecnicos.  The four rudos began stomping the shit out of their opponents until the insane luchadore, Super Crazy, hit the ring to save Nicho and Mascara Sagrada.  Nicho promised revenge afterwards, and challenged the team of the fake Psicosis and Rey Misterio to face himself and Super Crazy in the near future.  The following photos were taken by premeire lucha photographer, Aledesp.  Check out hella' photos from Friday's show, as well as a boss collection of lucha photography over at his groovy site.

Hehehe.  La Parka stickers really seem to send you monkeys into a frenzy.  I got a ton of e-mails from frustrated sticker hunters, so perhaps I hid it a little too well.  I'm sorry if I caused any permanent trauma.  Only one person nailed it, and ironically enough, he found it in the first place he looked.  J.D. Fox was able to spot the sticker  in  the  Viva  La  Lucha  Libre! article in  the  music  section.  I'll  leave  it  there as a everlasting reference to this stupid contest, so check it out if you need some closure.  Thanks to everybody  who  participated.  Viva  la  lucha  libre!
