Califa LLE poster

July 11, 2003

Ya’ know how sometimes you get a gnarly scab on your leg?  You want to scratch it, but you know that just like every other time you’ve scratch one, it will result in a bloody mess.

Well, like many of you I’m sure, I have this urge to see Mexican wrestlers participating in American wrestling events.  I love lucha libre, and I want to believe that if the American wrestling fans could just get a glimpse of some great lucha action, they too would love it.  So, like a scab-picking fiend, I keep hoping for an American fed to give luchadores a chance, knowing full well that it won’t end well.
It was announced last week that NWA-TNA would be bringing in Shocker and Negro Casas (why Negro, rather than Ultimo Guerrero or Vampiro is beyond me, but that’s an article for another day) for a X-Division 4-way match.  My heart lit up, and calls were made to ensure that I would be able to watch the following weeks NWA PPV.  The hands of fate intervened however, and before I could fully get my hopes up, it was announced that Shocker and Casas had pulled out of the engagement.
Ahhh, fuck it.  At least I don’t have to sit through their corny-ass PPV, right?  Although I was a little disappointed that a potential opportunity for ‘1000% Guapo’ t-shirts to sweep the nation had been missed, I knew that it was probably for the best.
That’s when the sweet smell of controversy filled the air.  Exactly why wouldn’t Shocker and Negro Casas be appearing on the show?  A nation of lucha fanboys wanted to know, resulting in several conflicting reports.
In his PWBTS column, Bob Barnett reported that Shocker and Negro had been booked to lose in the 4-way match against their less experienced opponents.  I’m not going to tell you that they shouldn’t do the job just because they’re huge stars in Mexico, but it really does make no sense for Shocker or Negro to fly all the way to Nashville just to look bad.  Besides, Shocker is one talented son of a bitch, so why not give him a shot to get over with the fans.  Would it really kill them to have at least one over Mexican on the roster?
It is also been rumored that Paco Alanso, the CMLL head booker, requested them to drop the NWA show for similar reasons.  If it’s true then I say “good move, hermano.”  It’s bad enough what TNA did to Nicho’s US credibility when he did a few embarrassing jobs for them in their early shows.  No need to fuck up Shockers groove too, jerks.

Contrary to these reports, Dave Meltzer claims that the luchadores’ decision had nothing to do with the outcome of the actual match.  Well, I’d like to believe that, but it would require an explanation of the actual reason.  Maybe it’s printed in one of his newsletters, but I’ll be damned if I know anybody with a subscription.
As the internet began to receive all of these reports, TNA cheerleader Jeremy Borash has since defended his company, claiming that Shocker would have reigned victorious on Wednesday.  Again, I’d like to believe it, but am instead left pondering the possibilities that could have been.

lthough I don’t have faith in NWA-TNA at this point, I’d like them to know that it’s not to late to save face.  Book a lucha libre exhibition match on an upcoming show.  Get the Guerreros Del Infierno to show off some of their 3-man submission moves, or let Ricky Marvin and Virus tear the building down, or maybe give La Parka and Wagner Jr. ten minutes to…

(Sigh)…fucking scabs.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but California is drenched in lucha libre right now.  No doubt aided by Rey Mysterio Jr and Mucha Lucha on TV, promoters seem to be a little more confident in booking lucha-oriented shows here, and I'm having more fun than a monkey in a beat-off contest.  If I hadn't put off this update for so long, I could've hyped up the FMLL show that'll be taking place San Jose this Saturday (7/12).  It's not every weekend that cats like Mil Mascaras, La Parka, and Rey Misterio visit the Bay Area, so check it out if you can.
I
WRG Intercontinental Champion, and Osama Bin Laden's favorite Mexican, Scorpio Jr will be in San Francisco on August 3rd, defending his title against former IWRG bad ass, Rockero Del Diablo.  Califa  LLE and Pro Wrestling Iron will be co-promoting the show, which will also feature The Spanish Announce Team versus B-Boy and Lil' Cholo.  More details about this show should be available in the next few days, so check back next week for the skinny.  Until then, Viva La Lucha Libre!
