November 23, 2001

The big story this week is the upcoming arrival of the infamous, Familia de Tijuana, Damian 666 and Halloween (they will not be bringing in original Familia member, Rey Misterio, at this time). Ever since his debut, Nicho El Millonario, aka Psicosis, has been taking a constant beating from CMLL's best tecnicos (including a wicked powerbomb to the outside from Hijo de Santo on the last show). During this Tuesdays CMLL main event, after getting pinned for the deciding fall, Nicho vented his frustrations, and announced that he would be flying in his two Tijuana associates on his private plane (he's a millionaire, remeber).
Damian and Halloween, who also wrestled as the masked Ciclope, gained massive exposure during their respective tenures in the WCW, including a run with the short lived Latino World Order. Halloween has since lost his mask to Super Parka, and has also recently lost his hair to Damian in Tijuana*. The duo has also found success in the Los Angeles hardcore fed, XPW. A questionable 'garbage' influence is visible in their style, with tables, chairs and other hardcore instruments frequently showing up in their matches. CMLL has always prided themselves on maintaining tradition, so hopefully the Tijuana duo will temporarily keep their hardcore bloodlust in check. Another question raised is the inclusion of their popular valet, Lady Victoria. While it's unknown if she'll appear with them on CMLL TV, she would undoubtedly add to their popularity, as she is monstrously over in Tijuana.
Damian and Halloween will make their debut in Arena Mexico today (11/23), teaming up with Nicho and Juventud Guerrera. They will battle with the spectacular tecnico team of Santo, Rey Misterio Jr, Negro Casas and...

El Hijo de Rayo de Jalisco announced on Tuesday that he is in need of a new name. He will temporarily wrestle under the name of 'El Hombre Sin Nombre,' and is asking the fans to write to him with suggestions for a new name (click here for CMLL's official contact page). He also revealed his corresponding, plainer mask, shown in the graphic above.
The reasons for this change seem very unclear. El Hijo de Rayo is undoubtedly the most over newcomers in CMLL, and one of the most athletic members of their roster. The 'Hijo de Rayo' gimmick would only have helped him get over, so it seems odd to take it from him now. It's possible that he requested the change personally, as he's not really Rayo de Jaliscos' son, and the fact that there is already a Rayo de Jalisco Jr. It's also possible that the name was taken due to backstage politics, as his rise to the top has been very quick, and he has unarguably garnered more praise than the mentioned Rayo de Jalisco Jr. Either way, he kind of needed a shorter name, and it appears that his new gimmick will give birth to a new mascara, which will hopefully kick ass, and compliment the new superstar.

Finally, I thought I'd mention that it was recently announced that Chavo Guerrero Jr will be a new trainer for the second edition of the MTV/WWF project, Tough Enough. While most Chavito fans groan that he'll be missing a month or two of TV time, the fact is that Chavo is getting worse story lines in the WWF than he did in WCW (Chavo as an Amway salesman, WTF?). And, as anybody that watched the first Tough Enough may have noticed, Al Snow and Jackie, two performers who were in a major slump, gained great exposure and mild pushes after the success of the show. Chavito has charisma to burn, and I think that a stint on Tough Enough will benefit him even more so than it did Snow.

If you haven't seen it yet, there's some in depth coverage of the November 16th Tijuana show, featuring La Parka, Santo, and La Familia de Tijuana, and the first 'TV results' has also been posted. We're still looking for staff members, as well as any suggestions, so drop me a line if you are interested. Until next week, Viva La Lucha Libre!
